This Friday, Aug 18th: Rivergator Celebration: The Wilderness Within: Please see below for the selection of watercolors to be exhibited and for sale as fundraiser on Friday at the Cutrer Mansion in Clarksdale. Thanks to Jen Waller, Coahoma High Education Center, and Kappi Allen,Visit Clarksdale! Special appreciation to Tom Wilson and staff at the Memphis Art Center & Supply for their support of this project! Most of these watercolor paintings were created plein aire during the March 20-May 4, 2017 Rivergator Expedition, St. Louis to Bonne Carre, using the sediment-rich waters of the Mississippi River for medium, rendered in darkness. You will notice many night scenes, star-scapes, moon-scapes, campfires, towboat lights, navigation lights, power plant lights, city lights and the mesmerizing reflections of luz & sombra across the swirling currents of the muddy river. The only time for painting was either the pre-dawn hours before the expedition rumbled to life, or after sunset when supper was finished, tents erected, canoes tied up, and all chores had been attended to. (Special recognition of Mark River and Lena Von Machui whose dedication, hard work and focus made this expedition possible). On Aug 18th we will be matching paintings with excerpts from Boyce Upholt's journal entries, mounted unframed on large flat-black panels, and displayed throughout the spacious Cutrer Mansion (Coahoma County Higher Education Center). Food and wine for all, bring something to share if you want. If you can't attend celebration, you can view most paintings in this newsletter and make purchases in support of project by sending email directly to john@island63.com or lena@island63.com.

We purchase our art materials and supplies from the good folks at Memphis Art Center & Supply . It's infinitely more enjoyable (and probably more effecient) going to a real art store and buying art stuff from real people (who are often artists themselves) -- as compared to the aggravation of online shopping. Go visit Tom, Susan, Gregg, Ruth, Antonio, and all the creative crew at 1636 Union Avenue in Memphis (also located in the Memphis College of Art).
