Outdoor Activity in Downtown Clarksdale -- on Sunflower River -- For kids & adults

Join Dr. Clifford Ochs and the University of Mississippi's Biology Department to explore the life in the Sunflower River. We'll have microscopes set up to view plankton and nets for catching fish and macroinvertebrates. Great experience for learners of all ages!

Dr. Cliff Ochs

Cliff Ochs, Ole Miss Dept of Biology:

Our lab is engaged in various studies in the areas of aquatic ecology and biogeochemistry. Broadly speaking, we are investigating connections between the abiotic environment, plankton community composition and activities, and biogeochemical cycles involving nitrogen, phosphorus, and carbon. Our research is focused mostly on aquatic habitats of northern Mississippi including oxbow lakes, various wetland types, reservoirs, the Mississippi River itself, and even flooded agricultural fields in the Mississippi Delta. Funding to support our work comes primarily from the National Science Foundation, the Environmental Protection Agency, and the Department of Agriculture.

Water/Ways Prayer Flags

Inspired by poet Wang Ping we are creating prayer flags in conjunction with the Smithsonian Water/Ways Exhibition at Quapaw Canoe Company in Clarksdale. As Ping shared with us, Every time the flag flutters in the wind, a prayer is sent out to the world. These will be on display starting Saturday Sept 29th at 12noon for our Youth Art Exhibition!

Come join us and make your own prayer flag!
