1. KIPP Dugout Canoe August 2nd at Helena's Delta Cultural Center 4-5:30pm

The KIPP Dugout Canoe was completed in May 2012 after three years of hard work by the students of the KIPP Delta College Prep School of Helena. Using geometry, creativity and carpentry, hundreds of KIPPsters helped turn a 2-ton log into a finely crafted 250-pound canoe! KIPP/Delta Cultural Center Reception on Thursday August 2nd from 4-5:30pm honoring the students who carved the canoe. At the Delta Cultural Center, 141 Cherry Street in Helena, Arkansas.

Open to the public. Come join the hundreds of KIPP Middle School students who carved a dugout canoe from a 14 foot long cottonwood log that originally weighed 2 tons! The tools they learned to use included axes, adzes, scorps, draw shaves, hand planes and carving chisels, employing geometry, sculpture and many thousands of hours of hard work. The KIPP saying “Work hard. Be nice.” was definitely in practice! The KIPP Dugout Canoe was completed in May 2012 after three years of carving. "Cross the River to the College!"
