River Journey November 1998

Journal Notes from the November 1998 Float to the Sea:

DAY 6-7
(Nov 10-11)
in Vicksburg
Captain Dave Schaeffer of Mississippi River Adventures let me camp on his loading barge, which was a much welcome relief to sandbars, and furthermore is conveniently located in downtown Vicksburg, at the foot of Clay Street. His sister Margaret helps him run the business, along with Marlene and a retired Army Corps revetment director, George, who introduced himself to me as "First Mate George." If you want to see the Mississippi up close, but you just don't want to rough it with Quapaw Canoe Company, contact Mississippi River Adventures. Their toll free number is (800) 521-4363. Captain Dave knows the river inside out, and does his tours in a powerful jet boat, The First Wave.

Special thanks to Linda Banchetti, Acting Director of the Southern Cultural Heritage Foundation, who let me use her computer for an island63.com update from there.
